It was just Sunday night that everyone was scratching their heads over the fact that Hidden Figures and Fences were merged into “Hidden Fences” at the Golden Globes. Even Gabrielle Union had to say something:
All jokes aside though, while it was likely an honest mistake, the fact that it happened twice in the same night was a bit disheartening. Jenna Bush-Hager, covering the Golden Globes for the first time for Today, said “Hidden Fences” first while interviewing Pharrell on the red carpet. Instead of correcting her, which would have been the best move, the music star looked off, perplexed, before ignoring the flub. The second time, actor Michael Keaton said “Hidden Fences” when announcing Octavia Spencer’s nomination for best supporting actress live during the show. And while Keaton likely won’t say diddly squat about his mistake, Bush-Hager decided to publicly apologize during Monday’s Today show.
Those tied to the film, including Pharrell, Janelle Monáe and Octavia Spencer, all showed love to Bush-Hager afterward.
While the name confusion was a bit irritating for fans of both spectacular films, it’s nice to see people not only using their platforms to own up to their mistakes, but to also be forgiving.
