I know toddlers can be pretty protective of their “blankeys,” but grown men? At the root of a fatal shooting in Tyler, TX, Saturday morning was a missing blanket that belonged to the mother of 29-year-old perpetrator Danez Dewayne Black.
According to Police, Danez’s mother was looking for her blanket in the room of his 21-year-old cousin Marquis Dwain Black, when Danez stepped in saying Marquis was disrespecting his mother.
Tyler Police Officer Don Martin said the two, “Got in a heated altercation and it lead to Danez going back to his room and grabbing a .22 caliber handgun and he came back and shot Marquis multiple times in the chest.” Danez was detained for questioning and later arrested and charged with the murder of his cousin.
The Black family and police officers aren’t sure what to make of the killing. Although drugs and alcohol are not suspected to be involved in the shooting, police did indicate that Danez has a history of violence and was on deferred adjudication for aggravated assault when he was arrested for the murder. In 2007, he had a felony conviction for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He is currently being held in the Smith County Jail on a $500,000 bond.
