The phrase ride-or-die tends to conjure up negative feelings, not just because of the word “die” but because of the implication that if you have to be a ride-or-die chick (or man) there must be some mess. But not all mess is bad mess. Sometimes the mess is just struggling to pay rent with your man while he waits to get his big break or putting your career on hold for a bit so your partner can seize a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Besides, not all ride-or-die scenarios are created equal. Here are nine times standing by a man — or woman — through the hard times actually worked out.

Barack and Michelle Obama

Would you have taken a chance on dating the intern you were chosen to advise? Not many established women would, but it certainly paid off for Michelle Obama who met husband Barack at the Chicago branch of the firm Sidley Austin where she was an associate years before he would come to be known as Senator and later President Barack Obama.

Cookie and Magic Johnson

There aren’t too many women who would stay with a man who not only cheated on them habitually but also caught HIV in the act, but Cookie is one of them and her understanding has paid off in more ways than one. Magic Johnson is currently worth a reported $500 million and, together, they’ve launched a number of successful business ventures.

Iva and Mike Colter

When fans tried to question Mike Colter for having a white wife, he simply explained: “I met my wife when I was struggling in grad school. She stuck with me for 16 years… people don’t understand when it comes to being with somebody long term, it’s way more than skin color that’s gonna make it work.” And that worked out for Iva.

Samuel L. Jackson and LaTanya Richardson

It’s as hard for a lover to stand by a partner battling addiction as it is for the addict to come clean, but in the end LaTanya Richardson went from wife of a crack addict to wife of the highest-grossing actor of all time, Samuel L. Jackson.

Gucci Mane and Keyshia Kaoir

Once upon a time, you would’ve been thought to be crazy dating Gucci Man in the early 2000s, let alone staying with him through a prison sentence. But the sober #glowup that is a healthier, happier, still financially well-off Gucci Mane post-prison makes Keyshia giving Guwop the time of day back in the day seem somewhat smart.

Charlie Wilson

Uncle Charlie’s wife Mahin is still a ride-or-die; 20 years after the couple met she still goes everywhere with him to make sure he doesn’t fall back into alcohol and cocaine addiction.

LL Cool J

LL Cool J wasn’t always the model husband he seems to be now. But Simone Smith overlooked some of his philandering ways and when she needed her husband, whom she’s known since the age of 19, the most during her battle with bone cancer he had her back.

Remy Ma and Papoose

Remy Ma

Most men wouldn’t stay with a woman during a prison stint, let alone marry them, but that’s exactly what Papoose did in 2008 after Remy Ma was sentenced to eight years behind bars. Remy was released early from prison in 2014 and immediately she and Papoose began to thrive, starring on Love & Hip-Hop and working on music.
