Quiet as its kept, one of the best things about Christmas time is watching all of those cheesy movies. Whether you tune in to Lifetime, Hallmark or ABC Family, there’s a holiday movie with your name on it. And while most of these films are far from Oscar-worthy, you will be entertained…might even shed a tear or two.

What I do notice though is that a lot of these holiday movies tend to neglect Black folks. If you do see a Black woman or person, she’s playing the wise best friend while the White girl lead stands, head facing the sky as snow flakes fall onto her cute button nose. It’s cute and that’s nice. But if you’re looking for the type of movie where the Black girl gets to live ever after, I’ve got you covered.

Marry Me for Christmas

This UPtv original movie is the one that inspired me to write this list in the first place. It’s the story of a woman who has been so consumed with work that she hasn’t made it home for Christmas in a few years, not to mention when she is home there’s pressure from her family to marry. This year, she brings her assistant home and the two end up pretending that they’re a couple. And things get very interesting from there. Melinda Williams is awesome in this one but you can’t help but fall in love with the entire cast of characters. You can watch this on Netflix.
