As Chaka Khan noted upon the death of actor Alan Thicke on December 13, “If ever there was a time celebs are thinking about our mortality, 2016 is it.” With the loss of so many icons whose work on stage and on screen left such an impact on our culture, many fans found themselves thinking the same thought. On the first day of 2016, singer Natalie Cole passed away at the age of 65 from congestive heart failure as a result of complications from a kidney transplant and Hepatitis C.

Music icon David Bowie died two days after his 69th birthday on January 10. The English legend who’d been married to model Iman since 1992 was diagnosed with liver cancer 18 months prior.

Maurice White

Earth, Wind, & Fire founder Maurice White died in his sleep on February 4 at the age of 74. The singer, songwriter, and performer was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in 1987, which caused him to retire from the group in 1994.


Vanity 6 lead singer Vanity passed away from kidney failure and a stomach illness on February 15. The Prince protegée was 57.
