City to Open 50 New Middle Schools by 2013

(Wall Street Journal) — New York City will open 50 new middle schools over the next two years in a renewed push to improve education in years that are “rife with challenge,” schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott said Tuesday.  In a speech at New York University, the chancellor said the city would undertake a “bolder and more focused” plan than any previous attempts. The move will include applying for $30 million in federal funds to remake current schools and imitate a previous Bloomberg administration strategy of replacing large high schools with smaller schools.
