How close are you to your mother? Are you “I call once a week” close or “We talk almost every day” close? According to a new study, the closer you were to your mother growing up, the longer you were likely to be a virgin. At least, that seems to be the case for the Dutch.

The study, published in the journal Pediatrics, noted that girls with a strong bond with their mothers waited longer to have sex for the very first time. The longitudinal study, done in the Netherlands, followed 2,931 young girls and boys between the ages of 12 and 16. The teens were asked at 12 about their sex lives, as well as their relationship with their parents, and then asked again at the age of 16.

What they found was that girls who had a “higher-quality relationship” with their mothers were much less likely to have started having sex between the ages of 12 and 16. However, it was found that the quality of their relationships with their fathers had no real proven effect. Of course, a close relationship with your mother isn’t foolproof. Out of the 2,931 participants, 233 young people, specifically 77 girls and 156 boys did start having heterosexual vaginal intercourse between the age of 12 and 15. And that number makes sense for the boys, as it was found that the quality of the relationship they had with their fathers or their mothers didn’t seem to make much of a difference on when they decided to engage in sexual intercourse.

But overall, they concluded that a higher-quality relationship between an adolescent and their parent can keep them from engaging in sex too soon, specifically between young girls and their mothers. Mothers are often the ones who have conversations about sex and sex education with their children, particularly with their daughters.Whether they’re talking to their daughters about the risks of having sex early or just being open when it comes to conversations about sex, it can go a long way.  If young people have little support, warmth and closeness with a parent, the likelihood of having intercourse at an early age tends to be higher. With that being said, do you think it’s true that the closer a teen is to their mother, the longer they might wait to have sex?
