After Maria Borges Rocked Her TWA At 2015 VS Fashion Show, This Year’s Models Won’t Wear Weave
When it comes to Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show presentations, the brand has always defined sexy as a model in wings and glittery lingerie strutting down the catwalk with cascading curls. Models usually have extensions added to their hair to add some drama to their look. But last year, Angel Maria Borges slayed the runway with her TWA and made headlines while doing so. She was the first Black VS Fashion Show model to embrace her natural hair during the show and looked amazing while doing so.
“I told my agent I wanted to walk in the Victoria’s Secret show with my natural hair,” Borges told Essence.com about how she ended up showing off her ‘fro during the show. “I was nervous, but I had to do it. When they said ‘yes’ I didn’t expect it, but I was so happy!”
Since Borges stepped out and made that bold choice, which ended up being a good if not great look for the brand, all of the models this year will be going the natural route — or as close to it as possible.
According to Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show stylist Sarah Potempa, many of the models with finer strands will still have their hair curled in waves, but she wants to focus on enhancing and embracing the natural curl textures of the Angels.
“We want to embrace everyone’s natural beauty,” Potempa told Refinery29. “We’re giving a carefree approach to the length and type of curl. Some women with shorter hair, maybe a lob, will walk with that hair. We’re not gonna add extensions to make it super-long. And if someone has short hair on the side or a tight haircut, we’re not gonna put a wig on or put extensions on their head. We’re gonna embrace it. There are 51 women, and we’re gonna make them feel their most beautiful.”
You can see curls of all variations (from loose waves to tight coils) when the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show airs on December 5 at 10 p.m. on CBS. And in case you were wondering, Borges will be back to turn heads with her fierce TWA for the fourth year in a row:
She won’t be alone in the TWA crew, though. Joining her this year will be model Herieth Paul, who is also a stunner:
