I can not tell you how excited I am for this Christmas season. Not because I’m anxious to see what presents I’ll find under the tree. But because this year’s theatrical releases sound pretty amazing. Not only will Hidden Figures, hit theaters on December 25, Fences, starring Viola Davis and Denzel Washington will also be on the big screen.
These two, without question, are a couple of the best actors of our generation. So I can’t wait to see what type of magic they create together. And in anticipation of the brilliance to come, these two were photographed together and individually for the cover of December’s Essence.
In the magazine, which is on newsstands now, both Davis and Washington spoke about their roles and preserving August Wilson’s legacy.
Washington, who serves as director as well as star of Fences, said, “What’s most important to me is that I take care of his words and his will for this play.”
The film is already creating quite a bit of Oscar buzz. With Viola’s name at the forefront. And though this might be another career-catapulting moment for her, she was hesitant about taking on this project for a second time. (Both Denzel and Viola starred in the Broadway revival of this production back in 2010.)
She said, “It’s not always that a director can say one thing that unlocks a scene when you’re blocked, especially with a scene that you’ve done so many times, but Denzel did that time and time again. He has a huge honesty gauge, so when he asked me to trust him, I did.”
