The benefits of early detection can’t be overstated when it comes to breast cancer. For many women, catching the disease early can literally mean surviving breast cancer versus succumbing to it, and one woman who knows that reality personally is Lisa Vidal.

The Being Mary Jane star is opening up about her breast cancer diagnosis on The Real today as a testament not only to how crucial early detection is, but also how key it is to do more than just get an annual mammogram.

The 51 year old was diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma, which is the most common form of breast cancer. “And here’s the thing,” she says on The Real today. “My mammogram showed nothing.”

“The reason I really wanted to talk about this is not only to share the experience, but to also say early diagnosis is so crucial. And mammograms don’t always find it.

Nothing against mammograms, but the ultra sound is what kinda saved my life because they found it so early. Mammograms  arelike a snowstorm and you’re trying to find the snowflake. And you don’t see it until it’s much worse, and so that why I really kind of want to advocate for women to get ultra sounds and early detection and so that was my diagnosis and the good thing was that it was treatable.”

Last week Vidal also shared a message of support to all those affected by the disease during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
