Over the weekend, two Hip Hop heavyweights, one legendary and one contemporary, had the chance to meet. I’m talking about Lauryn Hill and Nicki Minaj. The two performed at the Tidal X benefit concert where proceeds went to the Robin Hood Foundation, an organization that seeks to eliminate poverty in New York. Backstage, Nicki had a moment when she met Lauryn, a pioneer in the rap game, particularly for women MCs.

Naturally, Hill is a bit of an idol to Minaj and when she met her, she didn’t keep that to herself. She literally got down on her knees and bowed in Ms. Hill’s presence. As she did so, she said, “I’m in love with you. I’m in love with your spirit, your mind, everything about you.”

When I first saw the video on For Harriet’s Instagram page, I scrolled through the comments to see what the reaction was. There were several people who applauded Nicki for bowing in the presence of greatness, showing respect to her foremother. But there was another woman who posed the question

Naecissist said:“Wonder what Lauryn is thinking. All I have in my head watching this is ‘showing off your ass cuz you’re thinking it’s a trend.’”

It’s a fair question. There’s no doubt that outwardly, Nicki Minaj and Lauryn Hill have different styles with drastically different content. Still, I would like to think that both women could recognize that there’s a place for the other in the world of Hip Hop. There is room for the more conscious rapper and the one who focuses on materialism, bravado, and being a boss in a male dominated industry. I’m a proponent of women being able to represent themselves fully and if we need both Lauryn Hill and Nicki to do that, then so be it.

I just found the whole interaction to be a bit of a performance. I’m sure Nicki really does revere Lauryn Hill; but something about this encounter, perhaps the way Nicki started speaking in baby voice, or the touching of her forehead to the ground, just struck me as exaggerated. And I wonder what this meeting would have looked like if she weren’t being recorded.

Not that there’s anything wrong with a staged meeting, to illustrate her true love for Ms. Hill. It just reads differently than a more natural approach would have.

What do you think about the meeting of these two ladies? Did it strike you as odd or interesting?
