How To Recreate This Lupita Nyong’o Traditional Makeup Look

October 10, 2016  |

It’s a rare occasion that we don’t want to replicate some aspect of Lupita’s red carpet looks be it her hair, her dress, or her flawless skin. This time around, it’s the actress’s homage to traditional African face painting that had us scouring the internet for tips on how to recreate her beautiful makeup for the Queen of Katwe premiere in Johannesburg, and thankfully her makeup artist, Nick Barose, has generously laid out all the tips in an interview with People Style.

Of the choice to place metallic dots, which he considers a “piece of jewelry” above Nyong’o’s brows, Barose said he was “Inspired by traditional and contemporary face art in South Africa.” We have to say the inspiration paid off well. Here are the steps he took to create the star’s traditional look.

•First, Barose filled in Nyong’o’s brows darker than usual, to create greater contrast and ensure the dots over her eyes would stand out more.

•To create the dots, he applied the gold shade from the Lancôme Color Design 5 Pan Eyeshadow Palette in Kissed by Gold. “To intensify the metallic tone, he mixed a gold pigment with Mehron’s mixing liquid, which Barose says created ‘liquid gold’ that he also layered on top of her lipstick,” People reported.

A tip from Barose: “It helps to do faint dots first, then go over it with more intensity once you’re sure of the placement.

•As for the eyeshadow, Barose applied a black shade from Nyong’o’s lash lines all the way up to her brow bones, again drawing attention upward to the dots.

“I wet the eyeshadow so I could layer it and thin it out [where needed],” Barose explained. “That way, even though you’re only using one color you can build up the intensity.”

•Finally, for Nyong’o’s deep burgundy pout (with gold highlight), Barose used Lancome’s Color Design Lipstick in Fashion Forward and then used the liquid gold pigment for the dots to add highlight.

While you make be thinking this makeup seems dramatic, Barose said the key to this look is actually keeping it simple. “Avoid false lashes or any heavy liquid liner which would complicate it,” he advised. “Using too many products will complicate this. Keep it fresh and modern by keeping it simple — it’s very wearable that way!”
