Trey Songz Shows Support For Nate Parker: They Tried To Slight You And You Rose Above

September 28, 2016  |

Trey Songz hasn’t been on the music or entertainment seen much in recent months but that doesn’t mean the singer is out of touch with the latest headlines. In addition to speaking out on the current racial climate in the country and the far too frequent occurrence of another black man or woman being killed by law enforcement on Instagram a few days ago, Trigga also used the social media platform to voice support for Nate Parker and his film, The Birth of a Nation.

He wrote on Instagram yesterday in a picture with Nate Parker:

“This flag behind us means many things. The shackles before us, the same. I’m very proud to be American, while there are many things wrong with my country that shame myself and my people as well as many minorities, I love my country! Our history as black people has tried to be erased by those who thought of us as less than human, @origi_nate has brought an American story to life that I am very proud of. Congratulations brother, they tried to slight you in so many ways and you rose above. So many films and only now do they bring up your ACQUITTAL!!! Shine in Gods light #TheBirthOfANation #NateParker #NatTurner #Virginia #BlackLivesMatter #1831 #2016”

That message, of course, drew some ire from fans of Trey who refuse to support Nate or his movie on the life of Nat Turner. But Trigga held steadfast in his position, urging his followers to question, as many others have, “why didn’t this come up before any of his other movies?” He added, “I’ll tell you, to derail you from the issue at hand.”

That’s one way of looking at it.
