Gospel recording artist Kim Burrell has a long list of accolades in the industry. For starters, Beyoncé’, Kelly Rowland, Whitney Houston, Pharrell Williams, Frank Ocean and others have cited her as a mentor and inspiration. With an NAACP Image Award for her work on BET’s Sunday Best and a plethora of musical awards under belt, Burrell is known in many circles as “The Voice” and the Ella Fitzgerald of this generation.
Now, the musical maven is back on television with her own Houston-based daytime talk show!
Keep It Moving with Kim Burrell is a 30- minute talk show produced by Pick It Up Pictures. Viewers can expect a lot of energy from Kim and her guests during the series which will focus on entertainment, fashion, music, and most importantly, healing. Viewers describe Keep It Moving as an upbeat show for all ages to enjoy. We recently had a candid conversation with Ms. Burrell on her show and other endeavors.
MadameNoire (MN): What inspired you to take on this new platform as a talk show host?
Kim Burrell (KB): Evolution! I’ve been representing the church and strong women all my life. My voice is beyond church walls. This show also allows me to tell my story and let people deeper into my world. God put it in my spirit to do this.
MN: What has been the most exciting moment on the show thus far?
KB: The opportunity itself. My executive producer Jacquelyn Aluotto has been the vision caster for this. Anything I needed, she made it happen. Just watching the assignment unfold has been fabulous and I am grateful for that alone.
MN: What future topics would you like Keep It Moving with Kim Burrell to explore?
KB: Issues that we must deal with as women. I lost my mother to cancer in 2013. A lot of people do not know what I went through, as it was a very tough time for me. When you are that close to your mother, it’s hard living life without your template. So we’re going to talk about health, beauty, emotional wellness, and education. It’s time to include the church in worldly topics if we want positive changes to manifest.
MN: How do you want viewers to feel after watching an episode of Keep It Moving?
KB: I want to inspire people to live and encourage them. I’m going to do that by telling my story and educating them about Kim—Keep It Moving is derived from my name. So I want viewers to know me and take away hope from my personal battles.
MN: What is next for Kim Burrell? What should your fans be looking out for?
KB: I am writing a book about my life that will be out in the near future. I am on the soundtrack to Hidden Figures starring Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, and Janelle Monet with a song called “I See a Victory.” Pharrell asked me personally to be a part of this. I also did a live recording in Miami this summer and a project with Harry Connick, Jr.
Kim Burrell is definitely on the fast track to becoming one of the most relevant artist and influencers of this millennium. Although she wears many hats, she is no stranger to a little rest and relaxation! When Kim is not performing, or hosting her popular KTSU radio show you can find her enjoying her hometown of Houston with family and friends.
