9 Stars Who Were “Blindsided” By Divorce
You already know that Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are calling it quits. However, one of the saddest parts of their split (aside from what will happen with their six kids), is that Pitt didn’t see it coming. According to Pitt’s statement in response to Jolie’s filing, “I am very saddened by this, but what matters most now is the well-being of our kids. I kindly ask the press to give them the space they deserve during this challenging time.”
Pitt isn’t the first celebrity to be all smiles and in love one day, and then left wondering what went wrong the next. Quite a few stars have said that they were “blindsided” by their spouse’s decision to call it quits.
Keshia Knight Pulliam
After getting comfortable enough to let the world know that she and husband Ed Hartwell were expecting their first child together, Keshia Knight Pulliam was reportedly blindsided by Hartwell’s decision to turn right around and file for divorce. As she told Entertainment Tonight, “When he said he wanted our marriage, he wanted our family – I believed him,” she said. “That’s why I gave him this one last chance, only for him to pull the rug from under me and blindside me.”
Cynthia Bailey and Peter Thomas’s relationship always went up and down on Real Housewives of Atlanta, but things went really left when Thomas was spotted in his bar getting way too close to a patron. Bailey initially stood by him, but as cheating allegations continued, she eventually made it clear that she wanted out. Thomas was shocked.
“I thought we were in agreement about our separation until I was flooded with calls, text messages, direct messages, and emails from my closest friends and family members,” he told Uptown Magazine. “They were concerned about my well-being after reading news stories and blog posts where my wife says, ‘We are just not going to be married anymore.’”
Talk about coldblooded. Tom Cruise sent Nicole Kidman divorce papers just days before what would have been their 10th anniversary. She went through a downward spiral afterward, despite going on to win an Academy Award for her work in The Hours. “To be completely honest, I was running away from my life at that time,” she said. “I wasn’t able to handle the reality of my life.”
Cruise blindsided Kidman when he filed for divorce in 2001, and ex-wife Katie Holmes blindsided him when she executed a pretty intricate plan to bolt from the actor — and Scientology — in 2012. When releasing a statement about Holmes’s decision to file for divorce, Cruise’s rep said he was “deeply saddened” by the shocking turn of events.
The Real Housewives of Atlanta star said she was blindsided big time when Kordell Stewart decided to file for divorce. She was so blindsided that she found out about it online like everyone else. Her rep put out a statement saying Williams was misled to believe they were working on things.
“Mrs. Stewart had held off on filing for a divorce herself and remained committed to the marriage because Mr. Stewart promised to work on the marriage with her,” the rep told Us Weekly. “Instead, he misled her and she found out about the filing in the media.”
Glory Johnson had quite the volatile relationship with fellow WNBA star Brittney Griner. It was also a very short relationship. Griner filed for an annulment of their marriage, which only lasted 29 days. Johnson’s reps told TMZ that the pregnant basketball player was hoping to spend the rest of her life with Griner.
“Glory wouldn’t intentionally do anything to hurt Brittney and has tried her best to protect her and their marriage,” the rep said. “Obviously this marriage was about them starting their life together. Glory is the sweetest thing in the world and she was dedicated to their partnership.”
The former Newlyweds star said he was blindsided when Jessica Simpson decided that she wanted out of the marriage. According to what he told Rolling Stone, she told him, “I think I want a divorce” after dinner one evening. “I basically said, ‘Please, let’s sleep on it.’ But when we woke up the next day, Wednesday, she was still sure” he said.
Despite the fact that they put out a joint statement saying they would “always love each other,” it was clear that Robin Thicke wasn’t expecting Paula Patton to file for separation (even though he was out here grabbin’ a–es) in February 2014. He made effort after effort to try and win her back, even putting out an album called Paula, all to no avail. She went forward with a divorce filing in October.
The ex-wife of retired NBA player Derek Fisher said that she was blindsided by Derek’s decision to file for divorce — one month after they celebrated their 10th wedding anniversary. According to court documents obtained by TMZ, she claimed that Derek wasn’t answering her phone calls or text messages for two weeks before she returned to their New York apartment one day and noticed he removed all of his stuff. She got the last laugh, though. Derek was ordered to pay Candace $109,000 a month, on top of child support for their two kids at $15,000 a month.
