Men can go through several phases of getting serious about a woman. They don’t necessarily go straight from casually hooking up to calling you their girlfriend. And if you worry a man doesn’t take you seriously unless he calls you his girlfriend, causing you to bail early, this might mean you walk away from something that could have really been something. In little ways, men start to show they’re more serious about you, slowly, at a pace they’re comfortable with. Just enjoy it, acknowledge it, and know that when a man does these things, he’s usually moving you out of the “hookup” category. Here are small changes a man makes when he’s becoming more serious about you.

He worries when he doesn’t hear from you
He starts sending messages like, “I haven’t heard from you all day…everything okay?” and “You didn’t call me before going to bed last night. You usually do…”

He wants to hang out when there will be no sex
He knows that you’re on your period, or you had a terrible day, so sex is off the table. And yet, he still wants to see you.

An increase in PDA
He’s become way more comfortable pulling you onto his lap, holding your hand, and physically claiming you one way or another in public.

He complains about other women flirting
He talks about other women flirting with him as if it’s inappropriate. It’s almost like he’s saying you’re the only one who is allowed to flirt with him.

He’s interested in your calendar
He takes an interest in your general calendar and schedule. It’s probably because he wants to know when he can plan things with you.

He’s interested in other parts of your life
He starts asking more questions about your friends, your family, your work, your childhood and parts of your life outside of the time you spend with him.

Making new plans at the end of one plan
It used to be that, when you’d say goodbye, you had no idea when you’d see each other next–nobody would mention it. Now, the guy wants to know when he’ll see you next before saying goodbye.

That look
You know that look. He starts looking at you like he feels very lucky that, against all the odds, he found you. He starts looking at you like he wonders if you’re even real.

Inviting you as the plus one
When something comes up to which he can bring a plus one, he immediately calls you. He used to call you sometimes, but bring his buddies other times.

Offering to come along to something sh*tty
When he knows you have to visit a family member who you can’t stand, or you have a doctor’s appointment coming up that makes you nervous, he offers to come along.

Turning night hangs into day hangs
After you’ve spent the night together, he doesn’t rush off. He lays around in bed and starts looking up hikes you two can go on together, or good brunch places in the neighborhood.

Apologizing for texting while you’re together
If he gets a text while you’re together, he apologizes for having to answer it, and he even tells you who it is. You used to work on a none-of-your-business policy.

Checking on the status of your car/broken lock/etc.
He’s become more worried about you. If he knows you had a car problem, he checks on it until it’s fixed.

Reaching out on his break
He calls you during his break from work, or on his drive home from work, or when he gets a moment alone on his trip to visit his family. You add a little light to his life.

Telling you he’s thinking about you
Not about your breast, or your butt, or anything sexual. Just you. Maybe your smile, or your laugh.
