Nearly 14 months after the death of Bobbi Kristina, Nick Gordon has been found legally responsible for her death, civilly at least.
The decision was made by Fulton County Superior Court Judge T. Jackson Bedford this morning after Gordon failed to appear in court in Atlanta for the second time in the wrongful death suit filed by Brown’s estate last year. According to People, “Because Gordon has failed to appear twice, the judge said anything alleged by the plaintiff is admitted through omission.”
Brown’s estate attorney R. David Ware said in a press conference outside of the court:
“In court today, we finally finished a long journey for justice for Bobbi Kristina Brown. The court agrees with us, by striking Mr. Gordon’s answer that he is legally responsible for her death. The only thing left to prove is the value of her life. We intend to do that.”
The suit asked for $50 million in damages, but there’s no indication yet of how much the judge will award.
While Gordon may have been found civilly responsible for Brown’s death, has never been criminally charged. A source in the Fulton County District Attorney’s office told People the criminal investigation is “still ongoing.”
“This won’t change anything in the criminal case. Generally speaking, it tends to the other way around: a criminal conviction is used in a civil case,” the source explained. “Obviously, if he had taken the stand in a civil case, we could have used what he said. But that’s not what happened here. The case is still ongoing, but there are no new updates at this time.”
