As Prince put it in his song “Let’s Go Crazy,” we are here to get through this thing called life. And life is made up of much more than happy hour drinks, late night sushi, drive-in movies, great sex, great cuddling, and traveling. That’s what new relationships are made out of. But a relationship only stays new for so long, and then you discover if this person can really be a life partner. You can’t push life away forever, no matter how exciting and consuming a new relationship is. Eventually, you need to get back to your bills and your work and your family, and the only way to be with your boo is to do those things together. It’s how you weather those things that show if you can get through life together. Life is pretty long, so trying to trudge through it with the wrong person will be miserable. If you’re very lucky, you’ll meet that somebody who makes you believe life is too short. Here are 20 signs you and your partner can make it through life together.

You’ve been broke together

You’ve been totally broke before, and you still were happy. You were excited to eat cheap takeout on the couch that you found on the street because you did it together.

And rich together

You’ve also come into money together, and it didn’t change you or ruin you. You didn’t wrongfully cherish things more than each other.

You’ve had to be apart before

For work or personal reasons, you’ve had to be apart for several weeks or months at a time. And when that happened, jealousy didn’t ensue. When you saw each other again, it was if you were never apart.

You’ve forgiven each other a lot

You’ve fought, sure. But you’ve forgiven each other time and time again. Really forgiven each other — as in, you don’t bring those issues up anymore. Now that is a life skill.

You (almost) never keep score

You don’t do things to get something in return. Since you do them out of the kindness of your heart, you forget about them right after so how could you keep score?

You constantly think of one another

Everywhere you go, you think of how you can help your partner. You buy his favorite treats at the grocery store; you pick up a book on a topic he enjoys at the bookstore.

And they will let you be selfish, too
