Back To School: Stars Who Earned A Degree After The Fame

Choosing to go back to school is a personal decision for many. For the following stars, they either stepped away from the spotlight to take the time they needed to earn their degree, or achieved higher education during the height of their fame. Some went to four year colleges or universities after a TV show came to an end, and had the time to really focus on their studies. Either way, in honor of Nick Cannon enrolling at Howard University this fall, we’re recognizing these enterainers’ commitment to education. Here are a few well-known stars who chose to go back to school and earn a degree or certificate.

Tyra Banks

Model, TV host and business maven Tyra Banks attended Loyola Marymount University, but dropped out to pursue her modeling career. Years later, she enrolled in Harvard’s Owner/President Management extension course. And now Ty Ty is returning to school for a third time, but to teach. Tyra’s two-week MBA course at Stanford University is about personal branding, something she knows a lot about.

Cam Newton

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton fulfilled a promise he made to his mother by returning to Auburn University to complete his degree in sociology.

Antonio “L.A.” Reid

Songwriter, producer and current CEO of Epic Records Antonio “L.A.” Reid was already hugely successful, but he stopped running business to dedicate time to completing the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School.

Swizz Beatz

Harvard sure has a way with folks. And rightfully so – it’s Harvard. Just ask Kaseem Dean, aka Swizz Beatz. The music producer took the same Owner/President Management extension course that L.A. Reid took, and even lived in a Harvard dorm for nine weeks.

Shaq

Basketball champ Shaquille O’Neal left Louisiana State University early in order to pursue an NBA career, but he returned years later to complete his Bachelor’s degree. He then went on to obtain both his Master’s in business administration from the University of Phoenix, and Doctorate in education from Barry University.

Oprah

Oprah was one credit shy of graduating with a communication degree from Tennessee State University when she left to pursue her TV career. Years later, with her company Harpo, a TV  show, and an Oscar nomination under her belt, TSU invited Oprah to speak at commencement back in 1987. Oprah said she could only do it if she completed her coursework. So, she did!

Romeo Miller

Rapper, actor, model, basketball star? Romeo Miller’s career had been long underway when he enrolled in the University of Southern California. He was granted a full basketball scholarship, but left the Trojan’s team in his junior year.

Tia and Tamera Mowry

When you have a popular show on television, chances are you want to keep that momentum going. But after “Sister Sister” came to an end, both Tia and Tamera decided to attend Pepperdine University. They both earned a Bachelor’s degree in psychology.

Lloyd

We haven’t seen R&B crooner Lloyd in a minute. That’s probably because he was busy getting his GED. He recently graduated from Georgia’s Therrell High School. Congrats, Lloyd!

Keshia Knight Pulliam

Forever Rudy in our eyes, former Cosby Show star Keshia Knight Pulliam stepped away from the limelight, much like Tia and Tamera did, to go to college. She graduated with a BA in sociology from Spelman.

Tatyana Ali

Another Harvard attendee on the list, after “The Fresh Prince of Bel Air” ended, actress Tatyana Ali went to Harvard. She graduated from the Ivy League with a Bachelor’s in African American studies and government.
