Should you dump a man who doesn’t brush his teeth as often as he should? Or refuse a second date because he made you go Dutch on the first date?

These relationship issues may sound petty, but they’re actually a big deal. It’s never just about the breath or the money. The truth is that hiding behind these minor issues are major ones. And unless something changes, they can be a sign that things may not work at as hoped.

So before you judge yourself too harshly for wanting to give him the boot, read on to see if your issue is really petty — or if it will be a major issue down the line.

He Takes His Mother’s Side

There’s a reason “mama’s boy” isn’t a good thing to call a man. If he can’t say “no” to her now, at least one doctor says, he won’t be able to do it in the future either — even though a spouse should always come first.

He’s Still Friends with His Ex

This one isn’t always a case of straight-up jealousy. If things are serious between the two of you, but you feel like she’s always a presence in your relationship, get ready for one very uncomfortable situation. It’s a sign that he might not be the man for you.

He Spends Too Much Time with His Kids

Parenthood should be important to a man. But if coming second to his kids bothers you, it might be a sign that you’re better suited to be with a man who doesn’t already have kids of his own.

He Won’t Confirm Your Relationship Status on Social Media

If he’s on social media but he doesn’t want to tell his followers he’s committed? He might not be. A man who won’t admit to a relationship might be keeping his options open or still have cold feet when it comes to commitment.

He Won’t Celebrate Valentine’s Day

There are many reasons a man does this and none of them are great for a relationship: he doesn’t want to be bothered, he doesn’t believe in “spoiling” women, he doesn’t “believe” in the holiday, or he’s busy taking another woman out.

He Doesn’t Want to Spend Time with Your Friends

This one isn’t just about hanging out. It means that as things get more serious in your relationship, you’re going to have to choose. And whether you spend less time with your friends or with him, you might resent him later for feeling as though he made you make that choice.

He Wants You to Go Dutch on a Date

This one only sounds like it’s about something as petty as money.

It’s really a case of different dating philosophies. You think a man should treat a woman he asked out, but he feels that because you’re just getting to know each other, the bill should be split.

You two just aren’t on the same page. Whether or not you can get there is the real question.

He’s on His Phone When You’re Together

Not only is this one kind of rude, but it can also make you feel as though he would rather devote his time to someone or something other than you.

Try letting him know that that’s how you feel. He should know that it’s a big deal, but he might not realize it until you tell him.

He Has Hygiene Issues

Hygiene is a big deal and not just because you like things clean (and there’s nothing wrong with that). When his hygiene isn’t up to par, it doesn’t just gross you out, but it also kills the romance in the relationship. It’s better to talk to him about it before his hygiene issue is all you can think about when you’re together.

He Won’t Help Out

Whether it’s with the housework after you’ve had a long week, or when you find yourself in a financial bind, when a man just sits back and watches you struggle without offering help, it’s a sign that he’s thinking “It’s your problem, not mine.” And it’s hard to be with someone who has an every man or woman for themselves approach to relationships.

He Doesn’t Think of You

When he comes home with fast food without calling you first to ask if you want something, or goes to the kitchen without asking you if you want anything, it’s a sign that he’s naturally self-centered. If he can’t change his ways, he might not make a good partner.

You Love Him but Not His Job Situation

This one isn’t about being a gold digger. It’s about settling for what you don’t want. There’s nothing wrong with waiting for a man who most of the important things you’re seeking on your list.

You Don’t Share the Same Interests

It’s no big deal if he loves football while you hate it. But if there’s nothing that you enjoy doing together, it’s going to become harder to spend time quality time with one another.

He Doesn’t Call When He Says He Will

A good man is one you can rely on without having to worry about where he is or if he’s going to show up for you. Reliability is everything.
