Working While Black: They Want To Promote Me But Decrease My Pay
I’ve been working at a publishing company as a junior editor. I really enjoy my work. Not only that, I actually enjoy my coworkers as well. It’s one of the most fulfilling positions I’ve had in a while. Mostly because I’ve worked for some terrible companies with terrible people.
But it’s different here. I can see myself making a career with this company.
So much so that I recently applied for a promotion. I would be moving from junior editor to senior editor. And my boss told me just yesterday, the position is basically mine. He said that there was just one catch. The salary is less than my current position.
And I don’t mean a few hundred dollars. I mean 5,000 less.
So, right now, I make 55,000. And in the new position, which would require more work, they want to pay me $50,000.
I can’t help but feel like they’re taking advantage of me. They know I love the job and appreciate the work. They know I’m good at what I do, which is why they’ve decided to promote me. And I also feel like because I’m one of the three Black people who work for this company they believe this is all I’m worth. What added insult to injury is my current manager advising me to take the position with the hope that I would receive a 2 percent increase within a year.
Two percent. When I’m taking such a huge pay cut on the front end?!
The decision seems like an easy one to make. Don’t take the job. But I also feel like if I don’t take it, there will be a target on my back. If they ever need to get rid of someone, they’ll see me, still making $50k and regard me as expendable.
Still, my spirit is unsettled with the fact that they would even insult me by offering this.
Right now, I’m planning on staying in my current position and working on finding another company that can respect my time and talent. But I sure hope I don’t jump from the frying pan into the fire.
