Dylann Roof, the 22-year-old responsible for killing nine members of the Emanuel AME Church, including the pastor Rev. Clementa Pinckney, was assaulted in jail early this morning.
According to The Post and Courier, Roof was showering when the attack took place at 7:45 a.m.
25-year-old Dwayne Marion Stafford “allegedly exited his cell and ran downstairs to the first level of the jail where Roof was showering and began assaulting him with his hands, according to an incident report. Roof, who has been in solitary confinement since he was arrested in June 2015, was hit in the face and body and suffered bruising to his face and back. No weapons were involved. Detention officers broke up the fight.”
According to a tweet posted by The Post and Courier, both Roof and Stafford were examined by the jail’s medical team and released.
Stafford will be charged with third-degree assault and battery. The misdemeanor charge carries a penalty of 30 days in jail and a fine up to $500.
Stafford is in jail on strong armed robbery and first-degree assault and batter charges. His cases are still pending.
Roof is charged with nine murder counts. He is also charged with 33 other counts including hate crimes, religious rights violations. He faces the death penalty in both cases.
