This B.O.M.B. Challenge Is The Bomb
Rarely do makeup challenges amount to anything more than walking around looking cute, but beauty vlogger Jackie Aina is changing the game with a new call to action that could have a big impact on Black business.
Dubbed the B.O.M.B. challenge, Aina is calling on YouTubers — particularly white YouTubers — to support Black-Owned Makeup Brands (see B.O.M.B.) that are often overlooked by these popular internet sensations in favor of more mainstream brands. As Aina put it in the video announcing the challenge below, “If you can slather 100 different highlighters on your face (in reference to the latest trend sweeping the internet) I don’t see how farfetched it is to ask someone who is not black to support black-owned beauty brands.”
Neither do we.
To get the ball rolling, Aina uploaded the tutorial above which has already gotten 218,000 views in six days. In the caption she wrote:
“I challenge all of YOU (especially those of you who are not black!) to try some new products are support MORE black and minority owned businesses! There are a LOT of black-owned brands who are AMAZING and are often over looked and overshadowed by bigger brands who don’t even cater to us as much as they should! The same applies to black YouTubers! I challenge you to subscribe to someone new this week! Not out of guilt! But find someone who has the same interests as you but may not necessarily look like you and support them!”
In the video Aina also shouts out vloggers like Alyssa Forever and Alyssa Ashley who have already been doing B.O.M.B. tutorials with makeup products from only Black-owned brands, but makes it clear this challenge is specifically to encourage non-Black YouTubers to “do something out of the ordinary!”
