Tricks For Getting To Sleep On Hot Summer Nights
Hot summer days are amazing. Hot summer nights? Not so much. Let’s just say that they can be a lot less pleasant. That unpleasantness can get worse and worse if you don’t have central air conditioning, your electricity goes out, your unit is broken, or a heat wave comes out of nowhere. But before you run up your water bill with a shower every few hours in your desperate search for a break, know your options.
If you like it cool at night but the weather is making it hard for you to get to sleep due to the hot air blowing, we have a few good ways to cut down on all that tossing and turning.
These tricks for getting to sleep during summer heat waves will get you cool enough to finally catch some z’s and leave you feeling a lot less sticky and uncomfortable morning, noon and night.
Keep Your Flat Sheets in the Freezer
Put them in a bag first and then pop your flat sheets in the freezer to chill when you’re out at work. Cover up with one when it’s time to go to bed and you will cool down faster.
Keep several in the freezer and you can swap them if you don’t get to sleep before they get warm again.
Get a Hot Water Bottle
Freeze it then stash it under the sheets to keep cool all night long.
Place a box fan in the window facing out to draw cool air in. Keep another window on the other side of the room or house open and you will create a cooling breeze.
Feel like it’s just blowing hot air? Wet a sheet and hang it over the window that’s drawing in air. It will cool the air down as it enters your room.
Take a Cold Shower
It will lower your body temperature and make the night air feel cooler even if it isn’t.
Move to the Ground Floor
In older houses with no central air conditioning, the coolest level of the home is the lowest floor. To stay out of the way of rising warm air, try moving an air mattress to the ground floor or the basement.
Avoid using the stove and you will keep from heating the house up at night. Eat a light dinner and you can also avoid the rise in body temperature that can come after a heavy meal.
Get Cold Feet
Cold therapy socks are designed to keep you cool thanks to the ice packs inside of them. Slip them on before bed and they will keep you cool the way wool socks keep you warm.
Switch to Cotton Sheets
They’re the most breathable fabric and will let the breeze reach you without retaining heat.
If it feels like your fan is just blowing around hot air, place a bucket of ice or ice water in front of it to help create a cool breeze.
Turn off the Lights
Lights and electrical appliances generate a lot of heat. Unplug anything you’re not using and keep lights to a minimum to bring down the temperature.
