On Sunday (July 17) morning, local authorities responded to a shootout on Airline Highway in Baton Rouge, La. that ended in fatality.

The details on the shooting are scarce, but Baton Rouge Mayor Kip Holden told MSNBC that the officers of Baton Rouge Police Department and East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s deputies were struck during the exchange of gunfire. Five of the officers were transported to Our Lady of the Lake Hospital: three of which have died and two who remain at the hospital – reportedly one is in fair condition and the other in critical condition.

According to the sheriff’s office, at least one suspect is dead, but law enforcement officials believe that two others may be at large.

Local CBS affiliate WAFB, reported that a witness described hearing at least 25 to 30 gunshots when the shooting began. “I walked out into the street to see what was going on, there was a man lying in the street,” the witness said. “I assume he was dead because he wasn’t moving.”

The witness also said they believed the shooting started before police arrived, and described the suspect who was killed to be wearing black fatigues and armed with a rifle.

With the search for additional suspects intensifying, officials are asking the public to report any suspicious activity.

This ambush comes less than two weeks after the fatal shooting of Alton Sterling by police officers in Baton Rouge. It is unclear if these two incidents are connected, but state Rep. C. Denise Marcelle spoke on the situation: “We have to heal from this hurt. I’m calling upon everyone to pray today and to cease protests.”
