Eric Garner’s Family Releases New Song “I Can’t Breathe”
“I can’t breathe” were the last words of Eric Garner, the Staten Island resident who was put in a choke hold by a police officer on July 17, 2014 after allegedly selling loose cigarettes. He repeated that same phrase 11 times, only to be pronounced dead at a local hospital just an hour later.
It’s been nearly two years since the traumatizing happened, and unfortunately as a nation, we’re still dealing with police brutality and killing of blacks. In the wake of this past week’s events and the approaching anniversary of his untimely death, Garner’s family released a brand new song to pay tribute to his life with his last words being used as the title, “I Can’t Breathe.”
“If I lose my car, I can get another one. Lose my house, I can get another one. Lose my mind, I create another one. They took my brother and I can never get another one,” the lyrics read. “I’m tired of a system that will never love me. A system that took my brother from me. No matter how much money I receive, I can hear my brother crying ‘I can’t breathe.’”
“The song is dedicated to the struggle everyone is going through,” the family told Billboard. During a time as such, a song like this is needed, reminding us where we’ve been and where we should strive to be as a nation regarding racial tension and police brutality.
