Happy Born Day! Our Favorite Angela Bassett Performances

Malcolm X

I think I really love Angela in this film because her beauty and power is really understated in it. Not very much makeup or big hair and wigs. When we meet her, her hair is covered, her voice very quiet. Bassett held her own extremely well alongside Denzel Washington (stud), and the two had an amazing amount of chemistry. I mean, how can you not? The brother had it going ON. Her role in this film, portraying Betty Shabazz, or Betty X, was done before her star-studded take in What’s Love Got to Do With It. She was still virtually an unknown. And without the usual hysterics and scenes of emotional breakdown we’re used to and wait for (besides Malcolm’s death scene at the Audubon Ballroom), Angela still got her name out there and killed it.
