According to our friends over at theGrio, during a broadcast of his syndicated morning show this week, Steve Harvey made clear his thoughts on Tavis Smiley and Cornel West’s controversial “Poverty Tour,” as well as his feelings about both men: he called them “Uncle Toms.” While West and Smiley claim they are participating in the tour to help further expose the plight of poor people and push those in power, namely President Obama, to do more to help them, Harvey called it a bunch of BS. Instead, he blames sore feelings and personal vendettas against the president for unsent inauguration tickets and dashed public speaking hopes as a reason the men have been attacking President Obama so hard as of late:
“I was a huge fan of Cornel West,” he said. “[But] Tavis, I seen him coming a mile away. His anger started when he had a town hall meeting, President Obama couldn’t come because of the campaign trail and he sent Mrs. Obama. He has held that grudge ever since.”
Harvey went on to say the men were part of UTLO.org, which stands for “Uncle Tom Look Out,” and cautioned people to stay away from the “Poverty Tour.” While I’m not personally a fan of Tavis Smiley and Cornel West’s recent statements in reference to President Obama, it feels weird for Steve Harvey of all people to talk slick about anybody. But I can’t lie, he did have some interesting points! I would have just left the “Uncle Tom” reference out though…necessary? Not in the least.
