Today’s Tunes To Tie the Knot To

July 30, 2011  |

I’ve never been a big fan of winter white Cinderella gowns and the traditional wedding march, but even without those predictable wedding plans there are certain things that are custom to the African-American culture when it comes to special events, namely the music. I can’t speak for all black families, but I’ve never been to a family reunion where the evening didn’t culminate in a flash-mobbish performance of “The Electric Slide” (or some variation of it) just like I’ve never been to a wedding where the bride and groom didn’t saunter at some point to a Luther Vandross song (take your pick) or Jagged Edge’s “Let’s Get Married”.  This isn’t without good reason.  Some songs are simply timeless and instantly inspire feelings of fun, peace and love.

Forever is great for a marriage, but for your wedding you might want something that specifically reflects your relationship at this very special moment. More and more couples are breaking away from the ties of tradition and customizing their special day to reflect their culture and creatively send a message to their friends and families about their style.  Whether you’re walking down the aisle or cutting the reception rug to your first dance as husband and wife, there are plenty of songs to choose from that can personally express your unique love story but won’t have you blowing the dust off of your dad’s vinyl…
