There are many perks to forgoing sex during the preliminary stages of dating, and researchers with Match.com believe that they may have discovered another: couples who wait to have sex are generally happier.
According to Glamour, the survey of Match members revealed that people who waited until at least the fifth date to have sex were 35 percent happier than those who got down to business on the first date. What’s even more interesting is that people who waited until the engagement to have sex were the happiest.
Of course, it takes a lot more than holding out on sex to create a happy relationship, so the experts warn daters against using the results of this study as their sole reason for withholding the goods. You can do all of the “right” things, but if they’re being done with the wrong person, it’s likely that the outcome won’t be a favorable one.
“People who wait until an engagement or wedding to have sex are likely to have strong moral or religious reason for doing so,” explained Vanessa Marin, a sex therapist. “Of course, they’re going to report a sense of satisfaction for living up to their beliefs. That’s a great thing, but not everyone shares those types of values.”
