Lupita Nyong’o has accomplished a lot in a short time, including winning an Academy Award, being named People’s Most Beautiful Woman in 2014, and being one of our favorite girl crushes. But before all the shine and accolades, she was just a girl, trying to get a guy to go to prom with her. And it didn’t go well.

Nyong’o sat down for an interview on Late Night with Seth Meyers this week to promote her Broadway show Eclipsed. During the chat, she ended up bringing up the time she rallied to get a prom at her school, back when she was still in Kenya, and how trying to make the first move for a prom date didn’t go as planned.

“There was this guy in my neighborhood that I thought was so cute, so I gathered up the guts to ask him to prom. I didn’t talk to him much at all, but I asked him to prom [laughs].”

She continued, “I asked him to go, and he was like ‘Sure, sure, sure!’ I told him what the color scheme was going to be because I was designing my own dress and everything. I think it scared him because I was going to wear red and yellow. Maybe he didn’t have a red suit? But he didn’t show up.”

So there Nyong’o was, at her school’s first prom, a dance she was on the committee to make happen, in a dress of her own design, waiting for her date. Waiting, waiting and waiting…

All these years later, it’s something Nyong’o can easily laugh about (and blame her bold aspirations for a red and yellow color scheme as the reason). But considering how her career and name has skyrocketed, I can only imagine that guy who got cold feet isn’t laughing–wherever he is. #regretonfleek

Check out her chat with Meyers below. And if you have any crazy or semi-sad but with a side of it’s-all-good-I’ve-moved-on stories to share about your prom, do share.
