When I received a package of hair products labeled as “anti-aging” my initial reaction was a bit of an eyeroll. As someone who just took the plunge into anti-aging skin care products, I wasn’t thrilled about the idea of needing such “technology” for my hair too — plus the cynic in me wondered if that promise to peel back the strands of time was just a sales gimmick. And then I actually tried the Alterna Haircare Moisture Intense Collection.
The new collection consists of a Caviar Oil Crème Pre-Shampoo Treatment, Caviar Oil Crème Shampoo, and, you guessed it, a Caviar Oil Crème Conditioner. Most naturals are familiar with pre-poo treatments. I, personally, have never taken the time to prepare my hair for cleansing — except for the one time I slapped on a bunch of olive oil before shampooing and it dripped all over my face and neck because I didn’t have a shower cap and I decided I was done with that — so having a ready-made concoction definitely appealed to me. Created with people with severely dry hair in mind, the treatment boosts the performance of shampoos and conditioners by “binding the hydrating agents in both products to better hydrate hair” which revitalizes dry strands. The binding process also repels minerals in water to prevent build up and I can attest to definitely having a better lathering experience after using the pre-shampoo product. Plus I noticed my hair had more sheen right away after letting the pre-poo product sit for the recommended 15 minutes before shampooing.
As soon as I squeezed the Moisture Intense shampoo out of the bottle I knew I had a high-end product on my hand. The Caviar Oil Crème Shampoo is thick and somewhat dense as opposed to other shampoos that tend to be runny, like water. The texture can likely be attributed to its key ingredients, Abyssinian Oil, which binds to bring impurities and bad oils to the surface of the hair shaft, as well as avocado and olive oils and anti-aging caviar extract, which all hydrate the hair. My strands felt moisturized after using this shampoo, rather than stripped of moisture, which gave me high hopes for the conditioner.
The Caviar Oil Crème Conditioner was just as rich in quality and texture. Made with the same ingredients as the shampoo, the conditioner also packs Omega 9 Fatty Acids and promises to transform “dry, coarse hair after just one use,” while providing “the highest possible level of hydration for people with severely dry hair in need of deep conditioning with every wash.” Although my hair isn’t necessarily dry, I am always looking for products that will keep my hair looking hydrated throughout the day and stop products from making my curls hard and brittle and, in my opinion, this conditioner delivers. For the past few weeks I’ve noticed more shine and definition and it even feels like my hair has had a bit of a growth spurt since incorporating these products into my wash routine.
The Alterna Haircare Moisture Intense Collection is also free of Parabens, Sulfates, Phthalates, Synthetic Color, Paraffins, Gluten, DEA/TEA, Phthalates, Mineral Oil & Petrolatum which is good news for all hair types and it can be found at Sephora, Ulta, Nordstom, select fine salons throughout the nation, and on Alternahaircare.com. At $32 each for the shampoo and conditioner and $30 for the pre-shampoo, the high-end line is a bit pricey, but I think you’ll find you get what you pay for when it comes to this collection, which your hair will most likely thank you for.
