Ebony did not come to play with the body-positive message the magazine sent with its March 2015 cover featuring “The Body Brigade.” Posing in all of their full-figured glory are blogger Gabi Gregg, singers Jazmine Sullivan and Chrisette Michele, and actress Danielle Brooks demonstrating how they get in formation as a prequel to a very candid conversation on plus-size body image battles.

In the feature story, “The Curvy Confessionals,” the women discuss body acceptance as Black women with writer Tomika Anderson who personally knows the struggle as well. In an excerpt from the piece, Anderson writes about self-love and the acceptance of full-figured bodies in the Black community against the backdrop of “weighing in as the most obese of any group in the country.”

“We are all Black women who have had varying struggles with weight, food and body acceptance,” Anderson writes. “Unlike me, my dining mates lead public lives. In this exclusive conversation, you will be privy to their raw emotional honesty and sound intellect, and whether you are someone who could have joined us for the meal or someone who has never engaged in the body image battle, you will learn how critical, complicated, contradictory and sometimes completely satisfying the relationship between big Black women and their bodies is.”

I personally can’t wait to observe that conversation in print when the issue hits stands, but the slayage happening around the cover on Instagram is already giving me all the feels. Check out more behind the scenes coverage from the shoot below. What do you think about the cover and the conversations that are being had as a result?
