The Black Panthers Weren't Terrorists feat

Don’t let the angry, racist White folks tell you that the Black Panther Party was a terrorist organization. They were an organization that was seeking to do what many, in the Black Lives Matter movement and elsewhere are seeking to do today. And that is end the oppression of Black people in this country.

They wanted to stop police brutality, they wanted economic empowerment in the Black community, they wanted Black people, who had been taught to hate themselves, to love and appreciate themselves as valuable members of society. And they wanted to protect themselves from any threats even if that threat came from law enforcement or the government.

There’s nothing terrorist about that.

But the thing is, any threat to the status quo, any threat to White supremacy is often interpreted as a threat to the country, to the government, which relied and still relies so heavily on rich, White people being in control. It’s the reason the FBI targeted the Black Panther Party and disseminated much of the false information surrounding the Party that still exists today. Information about the group being terrorists, anti-white and likening them to the Klan.

Not true.

And the PBS documentary that airs tonight seeks to unearth the truth about the party and debunk many of the myths.
