Drop It Like It’s Hot: Can You Guess The Best Time Of Day To Poop?

Sorry if this is too much information, but I love a good poop. And don’t play brand new, because I know you enjoy them too. A natural, comfortable one. Ooooh, especially after a hard workout! You feel so much lighter, clearer, carefree. And if you’ve ever been constipated, you know what a blessing clearing out your system really is.

But is there actually an optimal time of day where one should have a bowel movement? Kenneth Koch, M.D., of the gastroenterology unit at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center told Cosmo that there is. It’s the morning. He told the publication that during a time of rest, your small intestine and colon work hard to process the food you ate the day before. The food is likely very prepared to come out of the body within the first 30 minutes of you moving about in the morning, making it the regular time of day to go No. 2.

But don’t feel pressured to ensure that you go to the bathroom only in the morning. Stephen B. Hanauer, M.D. of Northwestern Medicine’s Digestive Health Center told Cosmo that three times a day is okay, but so is one poop a week. It’s about listening to your body, and figuring out what it needs. Besides, what’s most important is getting your system to work habitually, because when there aren’t consistent movements happening, irregularity can come about. As well as some hardcore gas and bloat, and more serious issues like constipation and irritable bowel syndrome. Dr. Hanauer encourages people to eat certain kinds of foods regularly, preferably ones rich in fiber, because “The best way to have regular bowel habits is to be regular in the things that effect bowel habits.”

So, if you can, get into the habit of dropping it like it’s hot in the morning. But as long as you’re regularly going, in the words of Kendrick Lamar, you gon’ be alright.
