The push for women of varying sizes being equal when it comes to beauty and society’s standards forges on, as American Eagle Outfitters’ popular lingerie and swimwear label, Aerie, continues to use Photoshop-free #AerieREAL campaign ads.
For the past two years, the booming label has made a refreshing promise to celebrate women of varying physiques without altering the way they look once it’s time to hit publish.
Just last year, actress Emma Roberts was cast and shared her excitement about joining the initiative, telling Refinery29, “It’s important for me to be a part of this [campaign], because I see how hard it is for girls my sister’s age, with social media and feeling like they need to look a certain way. I want to promote the idea that it’s okay to look like yourself.”
In their latest #AerieREAL campaign, the retailer featured “curve” model Barbie Ferreira. “We cast Barbie because she’s got nothing to hide, she’s strong and beautiful — she embraces her real self, which is the spirit of the Aerie Real message,” Jen Foyle, Aerie’s global brand president, told Refinery29.
While the high-brow fashion world hasn’t embraced plus-size models or shoppers just yet, it’s great to see progressive brands like Aerie empowering women to have positive feelings towards their body, regardless of what society and media try to tell us is the so-called norm. So, self reminder: Sample size isn’t the only size!
