It’s safe to say that I’ve become obsessed with organizing things in my apartment, but one area that I have yet to tackle is the kitchen. Anything goes in my cabinets right now. The spices are mixed up with the condiments. The canned goods are sharing a shelf with the jarred items and my cleaning supplies chill on the top of my refrigerator half of the time—just a hot mess. In 2016, I’m directing my efforts to bringing some order to my kitchen, beginning with the fridge. This week’s House Hack offers three practical tips for a neater, cleaner refrigerator.
There’s something about all of the open space inside of refrigerators that seem to welcome chaos. Placing baskets designated for specific items like fruit, yogurt or condiment jars give everything a place. It also helps you to keep things in order.
Break out the labels
Remember those baskets I told you to place in the fridge? Now, it’s time to label them. This solidifies which items each basket is for and you’ll be more inclined to put everything in its proper place.
Open your fridge each time you take out the trash
If you’re like me and have a bad habit of leaving leftovers in the fridge well past their expiration dates, begin giving your fridge a once over each time you take out the trash and dump any items that have passed their primes. Also, take note of items that are inching towards their expiration dates and make an effort to use them before the next day.
