Remy Ma and Papoose

These days, everyone and their mama want to dole out relationship advice. Ironically, the ones who preach the loudest are usually the ones whose love lives are in shambles. However, every once in a while, someone comes along with advice worth hearing. Today, that person is rapper-turned-reality-personality Papoose. The “Love & Hip Hop New York” star, who has been dubbed “reality TV’s most loyal husband,” recently shared what he learned about love and marriage during and after his wife Remy Ma’s seven-year prison bid. One of Pap’s most important rules for marriage is keeping outsiders out of your relationship.

“If you are in a relationship with a person, it’s just you and that individual,” he told Essence. “It’s not really a 3rd or 4th body… People always have opinions, and I feel like you’ve got to keep your relationship between you and your spouse. Don’t ever allow other people come in between you.”

He also recommends giving your partner time to speak and actually listening to him or her as opposed to trying to talk over them.

“Let the other person talk,” he suggested. “That’s what we do; we take turns speaking. When you try to speak at the same time, and you’re yelling, and your baby is yelling, in the end, you don’t get anything accomplished. Take turns speaking and work it out…until there’s an end result.”

And of course, we can’t discuss marriage without talking about compromise.

“I think marriage is all about sacrifice and compromise,” said the rapper. “If you really love somebody, you have to be willing to humble yourself and make a sacrifice; make a compromise for that person. I would put my wife before myself because I understand the vows that I made when I got married—I live by them.”
