Throughout his storied career, many people knew David Bowie through his legendary personas, including Ziggy Stardust, Alladin Sane, and the Thin White Duke. But supermodel Iman Abdulmajid knew him and fell in love with the rock star solely as David Jones.
As she told the Guardian in 2013, “I was not ready for a relationship. Definitely I didn’t want to get into a relationship with somebody like him. But as I always said: I fell in love with David Jones. I did not fall in love with David Bowie. Bowie is just a persona. He’s a singer, an entertainer. David Jones is a man I met.”
And now, Iman is mourning the loss of that man, as are his millions of fans. The musician passed away on Sunday after a secret battle with cancer. He was 69.
A statement on Bowie’s website stated that “David Bowie died peacefully today surrounded by his family after a courageous 18-month battle with cancer. While many of you will share in this loss, we ask that you respect the family’s privacy during their time of grief.”
But Iman has briefly shared a message on the passing of her husband on Instagram, doing so on Sunday:
Bowie’s birthday was on January 8, and Iman shared a flurry of reposted images of him, celebrating his life. She also shared this:
Iman and Bowie were together for 25 years, marrying in 1992 and having a daughter together in 2000 named Alexandria. They managed to keep the fire burning, even if they were two very different people from very different backgrounds.
As Iman told Harper’s Bazaar about the love of her life, “David doesn’t fight,” she said. “He is English, so he just stays quiet. I’m the screamer. Then he always m
akes me laugh. It’s like cabaret. I keep him entertained, too. I still fancy him – totally! – after all these years.”
