Al Roker And Deborah Roberts On 20 Years Of Marriage: “Give And Take Isn’t So Easy”
Al Roker and Deborah Roberts have 16 Emmys between them — Al’s stemming from 19 years as the weatherman on Today and Deborah’s as a correspondent for 20/20 since 1995 — but the number that matters most to the pair is 20. That’s the number of years the power couple has been married and the accomplishment they’re delving into with their new book, Been There, Done That: Family Wisdom For Modern Times, which was just published today.
“Anyone who is honest about relationships — any relationship — knows it’s hard work,” Deborah told us. “Give and take isn’t so easy, but if you love enough to make the daily decision to respect the downs as well as the ups then you can find the true rhythm of marriage. We aren’t perfect but we’re getting the hang of it.”
It’s the process of getting the hang of it that the couple will relay in their book, from the values they’re passing on to their children, advice they received from their own parents, and the lessons they’ve picked up along the way, to sacrifices they’ve had to make professionally and personally and the mistakes they’ve learned and grown from.
“Marriage is hard work,” Roker said. “Communication is the key. The difference between men and women is how much we actually want to talk. We have different ideas about what communication is. So once you agree on that, everything falls into place.”
