Mommy Me Time: Recharge Before 2016 And Beyond

December 31, 2015  |

You wanted to be a mom, so you put an “S” on your chest and handle all the imperfections of motherhood. Moms are over-committed, over-stressed, over-tired and in need of some strategic “me” time. And now’s your moment right? The holidays are crazy, but that should be over! You are the prized mom, scoring the popular Frozen toy for your little one. The hubby is gaga over receiving the latest gaming console. All is happy in your household. Or is it?

Motherhood is a blessing and feeling harried will be a thing of the past soon. As your children get older, you learn to stop overbooking the calendar and start to accept that you matter. But there’s no need to wait. When was the last time you had a moment to sit down and dial up much needed ‘me’ time? Do the ‘me’ time test: Are your thoughts and actions out of control? You can’t breathe, patience is thin and a timeout is a dream, not a punishment? If you said yes, it’s time.

The spa, cocktails, face time with girlfriends, date night with partner, are all fabulous. However, that might not be on the schedule for weeks and you need to restore the calm and cool right now. Me time doesn’t need to be perfectly wrapped. It might present itself when you are in the bathroom and guess what — take it and relish every moment.

Tips for an Imperfect Me Time:

Create the vision. What do you want to happen differently in 2016? Write it down, make a collage and start believing that a change is coming.

Take a Selfie. You are beautiful and personal care starts with you.

Start the car. Put the keys in, sit, jam the music, start dancing in your seat and exhale.

Stay in the closet. Find a quiet space big enough to fit you, turn off the lights like Charlotte did in Sex and The City 2 and conjure up a happy moment sans child and hubby.

Walk. Time to burn some calories with the kids and use the backdrop of nature to inspire your bliss and visualization of the perfect ‘me’ time.

Laugh. Go to iTunes and download vintage Eddie Murphy comedy and laugh your butt off.

So fresh and so clean. Take a shower, wash off all the angst and sprinkle some lavender oil to relax your body and thoughts.

Make a call. Phone up your bestie for idle chitchat. Simply stay in the moment.

Find your Chakra. Get on the floor, breathe, count to 10 and know that all is well with the world.

Wine and mo’ wine. All is quiet in your household and why not celebrate with a glass of your favorite vino to celebrate a brand new you.

Sleep in. Mark it on the calendar, send a press release and let the house know that mom is taking a long snooze.

Prayers. Continue to stay in faith and know that life and family is a blessing. Stay in the moment and ask for help. You are the most important person in the household, set the example that you matter and self-care is important.
