Darrell Jordan, a special prosecutor handling the case, told the outlet:
“After reviewing all the evidence in the death of Sandra Bland, a Waller grand jury did not return an indictment in the death of Bland, nor were any indictments returned against any employee of the Waller County Jail.”
Though the grand jury is slated to reconvene in January to consider other indictments, this news is a hard pill to swallow, particularly for the Bland family, whose attorney told the local news affiliate, KPRC:
“We are not going to allow what they have done in a limited, secret capacity to prevent us from doing what we need to do to get answers for the family.”
On the civil front, the family still has some time to wait for justice as well. Last Thursday a trial date of January 23, 2017 was set for the civil lawsuit filed by the Bland family.
A number of frustrated messages flooded Twitter once this news broke, especially coming a week after the Freddie Gray mistrial. So far there are no details on the other indictments the Grand Jury is expected to consider next month.
