For this week’s edition of House Hacks, we’re going to discuss cleaning those icky makeup brushes. I was the worst when it came to keeping my brushes clean until I realized that there’s absolutely no excuse for this. Having clean brushes doesn’t = dropping $15.00 at MAC on brush cleaner. There are plenty of common household items that will do the trick. Today, I’ll be highlighting two different options.

Bar soap

Start by wetting the bristles of your brush in lukewarm water. Then, gently glide the brush across the bar of soap until it has been lathered up nicely. You should see the dirt and old makeup building on the bar of soap. Once you’re done, rinse the brush off with lukewarm water. Avoid getting the shaft of the brush wet, if possible. Gently press out the excess water and lie your brush down on a clean towel. Leave it to air dry overnight. Plain, unscented soap will probably be best the best choice for this method.

Olive oil + baby shampoo

If you have an empty container, you may be interested in creating your own brushing cleaning solution. You can do this by mixing equal parts of olive oil and shampoo and mixing them together with a spoon or whisk. Once the solution has been evenly blended, feel free to shampoo your brush and then rinse it clean with lukewarm water. Again, gently squeeze out excess water and leave your brushes on a clean towel to dry overnight.
