We all know about Spike Lee’s 40 Acres and a Mule Filmworks, Shondaland and the empires belonging to Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry, but did you know the following stars have production companies?

Viola Davis

The Emmy winner and How To Get Away With Murder star formed JuVee Productions with husband Julius Tennon, a company that produces character-driven stories in all media platforms. They recently released the short film The Brink and feature film Lila & Eve starring Davis and Jennifer Lopez.

Queen Latifah

Rapper, singer, talk-show host, actress, CoverGirl.  Is there anything Queen Latifah can’t do?  She founded Flavor Unit Entertainment in 1995, along with co-founder and producing partner Shakim Compere.  Over the years, Flavor Unit has produced the Emmy-winning film Bessie, the show Single Ladies, the films Just Wright, Beauty Shop and of course, The Queen Latifah Show.

Kenya Moore

Real Housewives of Atlanta star Kenya Moore opened Moore Vision Media back in 2008.  The company has since produced an erotic thriller named The Confidant. Moore Vision’s latest effort?  The series Life Twirls On.

Idris Elba

Actor, DJ, businessman.  Don’t you just love a true multi-hyphenate?  Especially one as gorgeous as Mr. Elba.  Idris Elba launched production company Green Door, which has a development deal with Shine North.  Together, the companies develop and produce shows for the UK and international markets.  King Of Speed, a racing documentary that Elba starred in, was their first joint effort.

LeBron James

It’s safe to say the entertainment bug bit Cleveland Cavalier LeBron James, what with his acting debut earlier this year in the movie Trainwreck.  Behind the scenes, his Springhill Productions company created Becoming, a show that documents the childhoods of professional athletes.  Springhill also produced the NBA’s first fashion show during All-Star weekend and is behind the hit Starz show Survivor’s Remorse.

Gabrielle Union

Gabrielle Union created the company Stew U along with writer-director Nzingha Stewart.  The company has optioned books and articles with the intent of creating content for Black women. They did release a short-lived web series called Riding Dirty with Officer Turner, but we’re anxiously awaiting whatever other goodness this dynamic duo has in store.

Larenz Tate

TateMEN Entertainment is the brainchild of actor Larenz Tate and brothers Larron and Lahmard.  Between them, they have over 25 years of experience in the biz.  TateMEN’s projects have included Love Come Down and 52 Blocks.

Tia and Tamera

These famous twins started Twilight Productions five years ago.  Through their company, Tia and Tamera co-produced and starred in the Lifetime movie Double Wedding.

Don Cheadle

Don Cheadle’s highly-anticipated Miles Davis biopic Miles Ahead is one of many projects produced by the actor’s company, Crescendo Productions.  Other films on Crescendo’s credit list include St. Vincent, his hit Showtime show House of Lies, and 2007 documentary Darfur Now.

Chris Tucker

Funny man Chris Tucker’s aptly-titled company, Chris Tucker Entertainment, produced his recent Netflix stand-up special.

Jamie Foxx

Jamie Foxx has two production companies under his belt: Foxx-King Entertainment and No Brainer Films (with Deon Taylor).  His companies have produced projects like Queen Latifah’s Life Support for the likes of HBO, and projects for Dreamworks and Paramount Pictures, to name a few.

Halle Berry

Berry’s moniker, 606 Films, was named after a bill that the actress has championed (it curbs paparazzi from photographing the children of celebrities.)   Berry co-produced the CBS series Extant and her company is now in the midst of producing two feature films.
