Somebody run James Wright some money! Wright is the sanging somebody who made a review about Patti Labelle’s boxed sweet potato pies that went absolutely viral.
I’m sure you’ve seen it by now, but on the off chance you haven’t, check it out below.
The pies, which had been in Walmart stores for months had not been selling well. That was until Black people, through social media (and even some mainstream White traditional media publications) started sharing James’ hilarious and glowing review. The video had gone so viral even Miss Patti herself had to call him and thank him for his contribution to her pockets.
So just how well did she do?
Well, if you tried to go to Walmart this past weekend and cop one, you might have found yourself unlucky as many stores across the country simply ran out. And don’t even bother trying to find online either.
According toYahoo Food, one store clerk was handing the pies to customers without the date and prices on them. And once they started flying off shelves, people started hocking them on Ebay for nearly 10 times the store price.
Walmart representative John Forrest Ales told Yahoo “For 72 hours, we were selling one per second.” He didn’t go into specific sale numbers but at $3.48 per pie that’s just under $1 million in sales over the weekend. Just imagine the damage that would have been done if stores had more in stock?
And with Thanksgiving just around the corner, I’m sure those sales won’t be slowing down anytime soon.
Well, unless Walmart can’t procure enough sweet potatoes.
Ales said in order to keep up with the current demand, the could would need 2 million pounds of California sweet potatoes.
So with all the money that James has put in both Walmart and Miss Patti’s pockets, we’re wondering if someone is getting ready to cut him a check?
Talk about the power of social media and the Black dollar.
