Charlie Sheen confirmed that he is HIV positive during a Tuesday morning appearance on NBC’s “Today.”
“I’m here to admit that I am in fact HIV positive,” the 50-year-old to Matt Lauer. “It’s a hard three letters to absorb. It’s a turning point in one’s life.”
As previously reported by TMZ, Sheen explained that he decided to come forward to halt extortion attempts.
“I have to put a stop to this onslaught, this barrage of attacks and of sub-truths and very harmful and mercurial stories that are about me, that threaten the health of so many others that couldn’t be further from the truth,” he said.
According to Sheen, he disclosed his status to people he believed that he could trust; however, many of them turned around and extorted him for “millions.”
“I trusted them, and they were deep in my inner circle, and I thought they could be helpful,” he said. Instead, “my trust turned to their treason.”
He was diagnosed roughly four years ago after suffering from intense migraines, which he initially believed were the result of a brain tumor.
“It started with what I thought was a series of crushing headaches,” he said. “I thought I had a brain tumor. I thought it was over.”
He insists that he did not knowingly infect anyone with the virus. He has engaged in unprotected sex with two partners since his diagnosis, but he adds that they both knew of his status beforehand and are under the care of his physician.
