Zion Willis is remembered for her “beautiful spirit” and amazing dance capabilities. Sadly, the 16-year-old, who once danced with the legendary Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, will never grace the stage again.
According to the New York Daily News, Willis was examining a gun inside of a Bronx apartment when it went off, causing her to shoot herself in the mouth. Willis was visiting an 18-year-old friend at the time. The gun belonged to Dale Weston, 42, who is the boyfriend of the 18-year-old’s older sister.
Police say the teen told them that she was hanging out with Willis in her bedroom when Weston pulled out the .40 caliber pistol and showed it to them. He left the gun in the room after he was called into another room. Willis reportedly picked the gun up to look at it and was starring straight down the barrel when it discharged. She died at the scene.
Weston immediately took off and police suspect that he took the weapon with him. Three adults and multiple children were in the apartment at the time of the incident. Willis’ relatives say that they’re still in the dark about exactly what happened.
“Zion’s mother and our whole family would like to know what really happened,” said Willis’ cousin, Sara Gray, 22. “We would like the truth.”
Police are still in pursuit of Weston.
