Every once in a while when I scroll through my social media feeds, I see posts by men who express a desire to meet women with more depth and substance. But a recent study suggests that these men are in the minority.
According to The Independent, researchers with the University of Texas, University of Buffalo and California Lutheran University found that while men find intelligent women to be attractive, they’re actually intimidated by them.
To collect data about what men find desirable in women, researchers read 105 men hypothetical scenarios that involved women who either outperformed them or underperformed them in the subjects of English and math. The men were then instructed to imagine these women as romantic partners. The first part of the study was then followed up with questions about whether or not the men would date someone like the imaginary woman in real life.
The majority of the men responded that women who top their scores as more desirable partners.
“Men formed favorable impressions and showed greater interest in women who displayed more (versus less) intelligence than themselves.”
However, they were reluctant and showed intimidation when it came to discussions about actually dating such a woman.
“[Men faced in this real life scenario] distanced themselves more from her, tended to rate her as less attractive, and showed less desire to exchange contact information or plan a date with her,” the study explained.
Of course, the study group was rather small, and the authors warn that more research needs to be done before they can confirm their conclusion, but it definitely gives you something to think about.
Have you ever felt that a man you were romantically interested in was intimidated by your smarts?
