A birthday celebration ended in tragedy earlier this month when a single mother was gunned down outside of a nightclub in Manhattan’s Flatiron District.
Walikque Fausett took a break from her studies and mommy duties to celebrate her 24th birthday with her best friend. The women wound up at the Motivo nightclub on Broadway. As they were preparing to leave the club, an altercation broke out between a disgruntled patron and a bouncer at the nightclub. According to DNAinfo, the patron threatened to return with a gun after security asked him to leave the club.
“I seen a guy being pulled back by bouncers. He was yelling at one. He said, ‘I’m going to my car to get my gun,’” said Claudia Claudio, 24.
Shortly after, the man reappeared with a gun and fired multiple shots towards the bouncer. He missed the security guard completely, but hit three women who were exiting the nightclub, two of which were Fausett and her friend.
“We were getting ready to leave, and we heard the shots. I heard two, ‘bang bang,’ one after another. It was scary. It was frightening,” said Ashley Valle, 25.
Fausett was hit in the back and was later pronounced dead at Bellevue Hospital. Her best friend, 25, was hit in the hip and foot. She is reported to be in stable condition. The third victim, 30, was struck in the shoulder and is also said to be in stable condition.
“EMS was trying to revive the girl in the green, but she wasn’t responding at all. It was horrible,” said Cassie Frieson, 26.
The suspect fled the scene after the shooting and was not immediately arrested, said an NYPD spokesperson.
“She’s friendly. Everyone loved her. There was not a bone in her that was hateful at all,” Fausett’s mother, Wendy Rodriguez, 41.
“It’s not right. He takes my daughter’s life,” she continued. “He gets to live. He grows old. Not mine. Not my daughter.”
Fausett was a psychology major and leaves behind a 3-year-old son. According to relatives, she rarely went out because she devoted her time to studying and caring for her son.
“How am I gonna explain this to him? He’s gonna wake up with no mom,” Rodriguez said.
