While doing charity work at the Seattle Children’s hospital over the summer, Russell Wilson formed a special bond with 6-year-old Aylinn Arredondo Avila, who was being treated at the pediatric medical center for lymphoblastic leukemia.
Tuesday, Avila asked the Seahawks quarterback to be her godfather. He agreed and excitedly took to Instagram to announce the news.
“!Este hermoso ángel se le preguntó por mí para ser su padrino! ¡Dije si! @SeattleChildrens
She asked for me to be her Godfather! I said Yes!”
Sadly, she passed away the following day.
“My heart, thoughts, and prayers go out to my goddaughter, Ailynn, and her family, as she is now with our Heavenly Father. I know you’ll be swinging your 12 flag over Centurylink this Sunday, sweetie,” he wrote Wednesday.
Avila was diagnosed with the blood disorder March of 2014. She underwent multiple rounds of chemotherapy, but eventually lost her battle against the deadly disease.
Funeral services for Avila have been scheduled for Thursday, October 1 at Holy Apostles Catholic Church in East Wenatchee, Washington.
Avila’s parents, who were forced to quit their full-time jobs after she fell ill, have asked for help with funeral-related expenses. To contribute, head over the family’s Go Fund Me page.
We send our prayers to the Avila family during this difficult time.
